PDF generation: Annoying problem!

Post by hoodi4lyx »

Hi there,

So since day one I have been having a problem with Lyx when it generates the PDF file (CTRL+R). By now I am so annoyed by that that I finally want to try to fix that, though for me it seems as if it's a bug.

So what happens: Whenever I generate the PDF file with CTRL+R or by clicking on the icon at the upper left, it does successfully generate the PDF and open my PDF viewer (Adobe Reader). But, it does so multiple times, slightly delayed.

So what happens is that my PDF reader opens and I start to look at the file or scroll in it etc, when suddenly another instance of my PDF program opens with the same file. Sometimes it even opens 3 or 4 times.

I am not seeing any regularity here, it's completely random. sometimes it only opens once. But about 70% of the time it does so multiple times. And no what I do is whenever I generate it, I don't even care if it opens and just stare at the screen for 5 seconds to wait for all the possible other instances it opens.

This is so annoying  Currently I know I will never use Lyx again if this is some kind of bug I can't fix.

What I've found out is that it doesn't seem to be a problem with my PDF reader, because I tried it with another one and same thing there.

Have you ever heard of this, and/or do you know or have a guess how I could solve that?

Thanks

It certainly sounds annoying. Sorry for the frustration. (off-topic: It's things like this that led me to give Ubuntu a try and I've found that's reduced my frustration a lot.)

Yes, I've heard of several problems with Adobe Acrobat Reader. I'm surprised that you've tried other PDF readers and that hasn't changed anything. I've never seen that before. Uwe (the Windows installer maintainer) has released a new installer. It fixes some of these issues. Others are not fixable from LyX and are due to how Acrobat treats files.

Here's another topic relating to Acrobat:

Hi!

I just tried with Summatra and it works like a charm! The problem's gone and Summatra is opening WAY faster than that crappy Adobe Reader. I can't remember what other PDF reader I tried, but it seems it shared some implementation details with the Adobe Reader or something. Well with Summatra it's working!

So thank you :)

But if I may use this thread for a little off-topic: Is there a way to setup Summatra so that scrolling the mouse wheel is scrolling the pages of the document, instead of single lines? I didn't find anything in the settings. Thanks

Glad that fixed the problem. I use Evince and Okular. I've never tried Summatra.
