Beginning with LaTeX right with the final thesis could be a tough start, but it's of course manageable. Here are some documents which can help you with the first steps: LaTeX Resources for Beginners.

"LaTeX for Complete Novices" is very good. And the first on in the list is quite known and good. Perhaps just browse some and see what you prefer. It's always good to see different views. And once you read an introduction, another tutorial is easy to scan, reading just the unknown things. If you would like to read a real book, I have written one, the "LaTeX Beginner's Guide", because I felt the need for a fast paced hands-on guide.

Thanx Stefan_K,

I have started latex by installing kile editor in ubuntu. i just gave the sudo apt-get install kile command and it has installed most of the packages. But how can i found out which all packages have been installed and which all do i need to install. Now i am going to start with beamer to create a slides for presentations.

New questions should be posted as a new topic. Other possibly helping readers could miss your question because they just see a "Greeting" topic. One problem - one topic, with a good summary as topic title - this is the best here.

Regarding your question, sudo dpkg -l lists installed packages, sudo dpkg -l | grep tex could show TeX packages and bundles. However, TeX would tell you if a package would be missing.

In the specific case, you could additionally use
