Perhaps the TeX Catalgue offers some helpful classes and packages.
To connect LaTeX to e.g. a MySQL database you will need something like LaTeXDB.

LuaTeX can be used for this. For example, you could use LuaSQL to connect to a database. There's a business application for producing documents such as catalogues from databases via (Lua)LaTeX, the speedata Publisher.
