Modifying Image Brightness

Post by insipidtoast »

I have lots of images that look great on the computer screen. Perfect brightness/contrast.

When I went to a local book printer the other day, the images printed a lot darker than they appear on my computer. I pointed this out to the person working there, and they said that when printing the actual book their machines would do a better job (apparently they just used their copier or something else to print my eight pages of samples).

For future reference, if I get a proof of my book from the printer, and the images look darker than expected, can the printing company adjust their settings to make the images print a bit brighter?
FYI:
I'm using windows with LyX 2.0 and MiKTeX 2.9
I'm designing a book using the Koma-script class

Modifying Image Brightness

I doubt that this question can be answered here because LaTeX has absolutely no influence on the quality of graphics. Why don't you ask in the respective print shop? If you get the answer that you have to process the images yourself, use an image manipulation software like GIMP.

I would wait for the proof pages to arrive, as the printer said the current copy is not representative. It could be a waste of time to rework the images to make them, brighter, if the proofs would turn out to appear too bright.

Depending on the proofs, you could brighten up the images. GIMP was a good recommendation by Thorsten. Just ensure, that you don't loose quality in this process: save in lossless JPEG format or PNG format, if the images are bitmaps.

If the print service could brighten up the images, depends on their production process. It could be possible that they could just make whole pages brighter, including the text, if they don't print images seperately.
