LyX ⇒ Citation (with multiple authors) stupidly long in Lyx?

i want it to show

[Author1 et al.(2008)]

when cited during my paper/thesis but it still shows all the authors!

[Author1 et al.(2008)Author2,Author3 and Author4]

which kind of defeats the purpose of the phrase et al.

i want to add that the names look fine under jabref. it would correctly show

[Author1 et al.(2008)]

but it becomes long once compiled.
