RefMaster - A BibTeX Reference Manager for Android

Post by RobertBares »

Hi everyone,

I am happy to announce that RefMaster is now available on Google Play.

RefMaster is a BibTeX reference manager for Android. With RefMaster you can now browse, share, and edit your BibTeX databases on the move. Add new books to your library by simply scanning the barcode, or journal papers by entering their DOI.

Please do tell me what you think, whether it is something you find useful or would like changed. Although I am sure all of you have plenty of .bib files to hand, I had been doing basic testing against IEEEexample.bib

Current features:
  • Loading from / saving to BibTeX .bib files
  • Browsing, viewing and editing entries
  • Searching entries
  • Hiding comment/preamble/string entries from display
  • Sorting by author, title, year or entry type
  • Sharing individual BibTeX entries
  • Adding new entries:
    • manually
    • by entering ISBN or DOI (requires internet access)
    • by scanning ISBN (requires internet access)
  • Supports BibTeX string concatenation using the # character
  • Supports common LaTeX accents ( see: http://www.bibtex.org/SpecialSymbols/ , excluding inverted ! and ? symbols )
  • Use of custom fonts to render LaTeX accents not supported by the stock fonts on the device
Planned features:
  • Actionbar and improved tablet support
  • Support for JabRef groups and linked files
  • Dropbox integration for BibTeX database / linked file access (so you can access your personal copies of papers directly within
    the app)

now available directly from Google Play: Click here

Change log:

v0.74 2012-07-27: first release on google play

v0.73b 2012-07-22: confirmation dialogs for deleting fields/entries, various bugfixes for dialogs

v0.72b 2012-07-22: fixed crash when exiting preferences without setting a custom font (workaround for v0.71b, save some text as a path to the custom font, it does not need to be a valid file, any text will do)

v0.71b 2012-07-22: first public beta

p.s. Currently this is largely a cross-post from the xda-developers forum, but it seems far more appropriate here at LaTeX-Community as you are a much better match to my target audience.

Recommended reading 2024:

LaTeXguide.org • LaTeX-Cookbook.net • TikZ.org

NEW: TikZ book now 40% off at Amazon.com for a short time.

And: Currently, Packt sells ebooks for $4.99 each if you buy 5 of their over 1000 ebooks. If you choose only a single one, $9.99. How about combining 3 LaTeX books with Python, gnuplot, mathplotlib, Matlab, ChatGPT or other AI books? Epub and PDF. Bundle (3 books, add more for higher discount): https://packt.link/MDH5p

Hi,

I've started using RefMaster and I'm really loving it. I mainly use Google Drive (GD) to store my information and I use both a tablet and laptop for doing my reading and annotating. I am also using Docear for managing, organizing and all the stuff you can do with it. Anyway, this is more or less my workflow (I use and want to use SD card for storage):
When in laptop
- Download article to folder (e.g. references) in GD. This is the 'monitoring folder' of Docear where I also have my .bib file
- Retrieve reference info with Docier and save
In tablet
- Use 'Drive Autosync', to sync google folder with Android tablet.
- Open .bib with RefMaster and voila! I can access to my bib and linked documents.

From there I can open the docs and read them. I use Xodo for this. However, I cannot edit them, the program asks me to save a copy of the document. Normally I can read and edit/annotate with Xodo when accessing the files directly from there. Since I open them from RefMaster it does not allow me to do it. This is very sad because I would like to use RefMaster to see and review which document I am really interested in by looking at the reference and then open it and read/annotate it.

I've seen this is an old thread but I hope it get to the right people out there who can get a hand on the app ;)

It would be nice to have the ability to allow the app to write on the SD card. Like Xodo or Drive AutoSync.

Another thing that I came across was the file paths. Everytime I enter a reference I need to change the line: "@comment{jabref-meta: fileDirectory:<path>;}" in the reference or in Docear I edit the location of the file, which a little bit anoying to do it everytime. Anyhow, it would be useful to have 'path conversion' (e.g. https://goo.gl/bGNFmz).

For the rest it does the job perfectly!

Regards,

h

Does anyone know what happened with this app or how to contact the author?

The app has disappeared from Google play and I could not find any website for the app or the author. I really love this app and find it very useful, it would be a pity for all that work having been abandoned! If the author is not interested any more it would be great if the source code could be open-sourced for others to take over.

Does anyone know something about this?

You can send a PM to the OP introducing RefMaster. But the user was last online to annoubce the google play store thingie on 27 of july 2012. Seems chances are pretty low he will se it.
The smart way: Calm down and take a deep breath, read posts and provided links attentively, try to understand and ask if necessary.
