Page Layout ⇒ how to double space the \thanks footnote?

The journal I intend to submit my paper to requires all footnotes and acknowledgments be double spaced. I've managed to double space all the standard footnotes (via \renewcommand{\footnotelayout}{\doublespacing}), but this doesn't work for the acknowledgments (the \thanks footnotes). Do you have any suggestions how to solve this?
