Is it possible to install LyX on RedHat 5 ?

Post by hm_cavalcanti »

Hello folks.

I am using LyX in a didatic environment and it is being very well accepted by the students. The problem is that due to some rules that we are attached, it is not possible to update the Operational System.

The problem is that the IT Manager could not install LyX on the redhat 5 OS. He said that he had some problems with some libraries. So, we are actually using LyX 1.3.6.

Is it possible to install newer versions on this OS?

Recommended reading 2024:

LaTeXguide.org • LaTeX-Cookbook.net • TikZ.org

NEW: TikZ book now 40% off at Amazon.com for a short time.

And: Currently, Packt sells ebooks for $4.99 each if you buy 5 of their over 1000 ebooks. If you choose only a single one, $9.99. How about combining 3 LaTeX books with Python, gnuplot, mathplotlib, Matlab, ChatGPT or other AI books? Epub and PDF. Bundle (3 books, add more for higher discount): https://packt.link/MDH5p

LyX is not shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (which is what I assume you mean; RedHat Linux 5 has been obsolete for thirteen years or so) or with its clones (e.g., CentOS 5, Scientific Linux 5). There is an "extra packages for enterprise linux" (EPEL) repository available (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL) which contains a build of LyX 1.6.10.

If you have the EPEL repository enabled, you can install LyX 1.6.10 with "yum install lyx" (and by "you," I mean, "your system administrator").

If you want newer versions, you will have to build them yourself, including any of the associated libraries that LyX needs. It may be possible, but be aware that building a newer version may actually require you to build a newer version of many other things, including things like Gnome or X11 (which you should NOT try to do).
