Best Location for Package Files on Mac OS 10.6.8

New to LaTeX2e; I have some sty files from 2.09 that I want available globally to TeXShop. I cannot locate (through Finder) any of the packages used in the TeXShop LaTeX template, so have no idea how to accomplish this under OS X. I think I know how to do it with MikTeX, but prefer to work with my Mac partition.

It is not recommendable at all to use old LaTeX2.09 style files. I'm quite sure that there are appropriate replacements for LaTeX2e.
