Re: Font Encoding Issue
perhaps post such a LyX document and the PDF output here, both can pe posted as attachment to a forum post. Perhaps the boldness is just a display issue of the PDF viewer.

Re: Font Encoding Issue
No problem. Also, I have discovered one cause of the problem.
I am using .png files with various bit depth (1, 12, 24, 32).
12, 24 bit depth has no problem, but very large (in pixels) images with 32 bit depth cause this issue.
To test it, I converted one of these very large images to black and white (bit depth = 1) and voila! No more bold face.
I think this is a serious bug in Lyx (unless there is an even more complex explanation having to do with the document settings, etc.) Attached is an example of the color and black and white comparison.
Still, how might I get my large, color images (32 bit depth) to work (the bold face is very ugly...)? The black and white or lower bit depth conversion is only a temporary work around...
Thanks for your quick reply. Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide!

Re: Font Encoding Issue
Still, if there's any interest it would be nice if someone solved this problem for when high quality images are necessary (for photographs)..

Undesired bold captions with Adobe Reader
So it's just a viewer issue. Some versions of the Adobe Reader have a display bug. Use a different viewer or print it, and you might see it.
