MiKTeX and proTeXt

I have a .sty file sent from a publisher that is not part of any distribution. I simply would like to use it. I have placed it in the same folder as the .tex file that I am using but this does not work. Where do I put this .sty file and how dow I make it accessible during compilation of my .tex file? Thank you so much.

The MiKTeX Manual shows how to integrate local additions to the TeX installation tree [1]. But placing the package file in the working directory should work without problems. A more precise problem description in form of exact error messages would be helpful.
