Multiplication

How do you recommend doing multiplication in LaTeX?

For example, would either of the following be advisable?
$2*3$ or $2 \times 3$

Depends on the typographical conventions of the language you are writing in. Hence there is no recommendation possible.

In Germany we use a "·" (\cdot) for the product of two scalars and "×" (\times) for the cross product of two vectors. In American English "×" is seemingly used for both. Other languages may have other typographical rules.
