If near the end of a page a new paragraph starts, but there's only space left for the first line or so of this new paragraph, I don't want only the first line to be displayed on this page and the rest of the paragraph on the next page, but rather the whole paragraph including it's first line on the next page.
Is there a way to tell LaTeX that it should begin a new page for the new paragraph if there's not enough space left on the old page for the first three or four lines or so of the next paragraph?

You are talking about widows and orphans. You can inhibit them with these two lines in the preamble of your document.
