General ⇒ Italic or emph subsection headings

Just a quick question, can anyone suggest the best way for me to get all of my subsection headings italicised? I have previously just added and \emph in each subsection heading but I know there is a better way to do it. I've tried \renewcommand however I'm not to sure what I'm doing with it and end up with italic headings that are small. I would just like italics with no change of the rest of the font properties.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Use package titlesec which lets you entirely customize section headings and all that stuff. Then you just make a macro package in which you use the titlesec commands which realize what you want and you add to your preamble something like

\usepackage{myownpersonalsectionformat}
