Document Classes ⇒ Glossary macro error compiling memman.tex from memoir class

I've been trying to compile memman.tex as a starting point for using the memoir class. I just downloaded it from ctan, and I get pretty close to a full compile, but then I run into an error that I think is related to a glossary macro:

Writing index file lines.idx
("C:\...\memoir\doc-src\memman.aux"
! Undefined control sequence.
l.9417 \@@wr

I messed around for a while to try to fix this but no success. Here are the exact steps to reproduce the error from scratch:

1) download and unzip the memoir directory from ctan:
http://mirror.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/memoir.zip
2) open memoir\doc-src\memman.tex
3) compile twice

I'm using MiKTeX 2.8 and TeXworks 0.4.3 r.858 on a Windows 7 machine

Why do you want to compile the manual from source. It is present as PDF file [1]. So there is no need for this.

My thinking was that if I can't compile memman from source how can I expect to use all of the features of the memoir class effectively?

I don' think that this goes in the right direction. I suggest just to start a document with the memoir class. If you face problems, ask targeted questions.
