Hello / New to LaTeX

Post by KPKilburn »

Hi all,

I'm new to LaTeX and to this forum. I recently discovered LaTeX after struggling with the formatting for a book I'm attempting to write. Microsoft Word just wasn't working, but after I discovered LaTeX, I knew it was exactly what I needed.

It's slow going, but I've managed to get LaTeX working on my Mac along with Scrivener and MMD3.

A book is an unusual big project to begin with LaTeX. Nevertheless it's a start. Good luck with that.

It's a retro-computing book (programming) so I'm in no real hurry - it's more for my personal satisfaction and learning than anything. Is there a "better" way to learn LaTeX? The structure is the same regardless of size, no?

It's not about better. If you are not bounded to a fixed date for finishing the book, I see no difficulties. Since the learning curve for LaTeX is very steep at the beginning, I guessed that you could run into trouble with such a project. Your book will cover almost all challenges of LaTeX so it will be a good project to learn it. It would be a bad idea to learn LaTeX while starting an important project, e. g. a thesis, because you couldn't concentrate on the content but waste your time with the learning process.

I see. I probably should have mentioned that I have no deadline to meet. :D
