@proceedings vs @conference vs @inproceedings

I am royally confused between the following bibtex entry types:

@proceedings
@conference
@inproceedings

When is one entry type more appropriate than the other? My current estimate is that all represent some document presented at a conference. But what is the differentiating factor between the three?

I guess you will find the answer in Section 3 of the BibTeX manual.
