problem with MikTek package updater

Post by Zardoz »

I have used the MikTek Package updater successfully before, but recently it has stopped working. No matter what I try to do -- install a package, or change default package repository, say -- I get the same error:
MiKTeX Problem Report
Message: The MiKTeX web service has rejected your request. Possible reason: too many requests arriving from your IP address.
Data: HTTP/1.0 403 Forbidden
Source: C:\work3\miktex-2.7\Libraries\MiKTeX\PackageManager\PackageManager.cpp

MiKTeX: 2.7
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

UserConfig: C:\Documents and Settings\ArtsStaff\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7
UserData: C:\Documents and Settings\ArtsStaff\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7
Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

I'm having the same issue! I can't run the updater or the package manager without getting an error message:
The operation could not be completed for the following reason:

Server was unable to process request. ---> Too many requests to the MiKTeX web service are arriving from your IP address. Please visit the status page at http://miktex.org/pkg/ for more information.
A quick trip to the URL produces no useful information. Furthermore, I'm working on a static IP, so releasing and reaquiring isn't an option.

Choose another server, preferably one that is located in (or next to) your home country.

I tried that already, Thorsten, but as I said in my original post, this gives me the same error. I can't do anything in MikTek at the moment without getting this error.

You might try to download on your machine using, say, Filezilla, and see what happens on choosing the storage directory on your hd as a local repository.

Hm. I didn't get told about the URL. It seems to me there is useful information on the site, namely this:
In order to reduce resource usage on the server, the web service stalls (and possibly rejects) excessive requests arriving from the same IP address.
At least this explains what is happening. But how can I stop it? I don't know why the web service has decided that too many requests have come from my IP address. Is there any way I can convince it to accept requests from me ever again? If not, the MikTex package updater is useless to me...

I'm having the exact same problem. I'm pretty naive when it comes to MikTex. I've tried a variety of things, but it keeps telling me that there are too many requests arriving from my ip address. How did you resolve your problem (if you did so)?

It is very unlikely that you get a useful answer in a thread that is more than two years old. Make sure that your server is on-line [1]. Otherwise choose another one close to your location.
