book | Change Appearance of Chapter Title

Hi all,

I am using the book class to format my thesis. Right now, the chapter title appears on its own page. I would like to make two changes:
  1. Make the body of the chapter appear right after the chapter title
  2. Decrease the font size of the chapter title

Both points are a job for the titlesec package. A Forum Search will yield feasible solutions. Since the described behaviour is not the default one, it would be better to present a minimal example of your recent efforts.
