LyX ⇒ Lyx 2.0.0 PDF update

Hello, I have a problem with the new version of Lyx. Since I use this version I have problems when I create a pdf of my document.

The pdf button works (it generates the pdf file) but when I have edited the file in any way it still shows the pdf as if I did not make the change. But when I save my file and restart Lyx it does shown the change. Am I doing something wrong? Can I prevent this from happening? I mean I can work with this but it’s just really annoying having to restart lyx every time I want to check the pdf file.....solutions anyone?

There are two buttons on the toolbar: the first one from the left is to generate PDF file (shortcut: Ctrl+R), and the second one is to refresh the PDF file (shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+R). Usually, after you've made any change to your doc, you'd press "Update" button to see the changes in the PDF output. Both buttons work as expected on my machine (Debian GNU/Linux). A little bit more details about your OS, LaTeX installation and the PDF viewer you're using might be helpful.

I am using windows 7 home premium 64bit as an OS and I use adobe reader 9.4.5 as pdf viewer.
I also have the older Lyx 1.6.8 installed (with this version I do not have any problems) (does this version maybe interfere with the other lyx 2.0?)


I now tried using files that where originally created with lyx 2.0 and now the problem is not as bad. Now it refreshes the pdf correctly most of the time and only in 1 out of 5 tries it fails to correctly update the PDF.
(previously I was working with files created originally in lyx 1.6.8)

It is strange that behavior for "fresh" and old files is different. Shouldn't be that way. However, LyX usually fails to compile/update a file when there is an error. Since I'm not familiar with LyX on Windows and issues related to it, all I can say is that you try with another PDF reader, just to see how it's going to work. I hear a lot of praise about Sumatra PDF reader, so you can start with that.

Note: PDF readers settings in LyX are located in: Tools > Preferences > File Handling > File Formats where you'll find "Format" drop-down list. Choose a correct format (e.g., LaTeX (pdflatex) for pdflatex) and change the viewer in the same window.

Well I tried sumatra PDF but it didn't really work for me. I now reinstalled adobe reader and I reinstalled Lyx. The problem still is not fixed but it has improved. Now most of the times I create or refresh the PDF file it updates correctly, about 1 out of 10 times it goes wrong. I do not know if this can be fixed but I will close this topic since this is an acceptable working condition for me. If anyone has the same problem and knows a solution please post it here

I'm using Mac OSX and just installed Lyx 2.0.
The good thing is that the spell checker is
working (although not automatic); however, the
pdf update button does not work. Whenever I make
changes to the document and click the refresh button
the changes do not show up. I have to close the
pdf doc and then compile again.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello Sas,

Have you tried reinstalling lyx? For me it solved the problem partially (on windows), meaning that most of the times the pdf button work ok and only a few times that it doesn't update properly.
If this doesn't work you could try the export function located in the menu:
File->export->PDF(PDFlatex) This export function always works for me but I know it's not the best solution since it takes longer etc.

I've tried reinstalling lyx but with no luck.
the file->export->pdf does not work either.
I have no idea what's wrong.

I suggest you ask at LyX mailing list, since this might be a technical issue (probably related to Mac OS, but I'm just guessing).
