General Questions about Projects

Post by h9uest »

Hi All:

I'm new to WinEdt and LaTex.

I see the project menu and new project option in it. However, when I do my experiment, I didn't creat a project. I simply create a file and type LaTex controls and my stuff in the file, and then press the Latex button. DVI file was created and it looked good. It seems unnecessary to create a project.

My questions are:
  1. What are "project" for?
  2. When do we typically need a "project"?
  3. What benefits is it going to bring me?
Thanks!

I don't work with Winedt, but my guess is that project files are beneficial if you're working on large documents, which contain several .tex files.

Thanks for the reply.
I'll just abandon the project option, manually set up my directory and compile.

Projects are beneficial in many aspects. They help to keep track of all files of your document. As Frits already mentioned, large documents are better split into several files. This is usually done by putting every chapter into a single file. Your editor uses the auxiliary files to present some more information when working in a project. Opening a project means opening all files included in this project. You will have all needful files kept together. Projects are not so important for shorter documents like articles or papers.
