LyX Error when opening a Version 2.0 File with Version 1.6.5

Hello all,

I use Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop and I installed LyX version 2.0. But at work I use OpenSUSE 11.3 and I use LyX 1.6.5 on that. When I open files from the version 2.0 in the 1.6.5 version, I get errors.

I prefer to stick with the version 1.6.5 but not sure where to get that version? Also would I need to un-install and remove all the version 2.0 files and the install the older version?

You should be careful when using different versions of an application, it is almost a rule that there is no backward compatibility between the newer and the older versions. However, there is a solution: if you don't like 2.0 for some reason, then you could install last stable from 1.6 series, i.e., version 1.6.10, which is able to open files created with 2.0. Or, you can export files from 2.0 to 1.6.x version, so that you can open them with 1.6.5 which you have currently installed.

Thank you for your reply. I was just thinking of using exactly the same version to avoid possible complications while I'm working. Do you think that would be the best thing to do?

I tried updating the Lyx on OpenSuse and it just went up to 1.6.5. Another question is should I be expecting the same files (download links) for any type of linux because I found links to install lyx for different type and versions of linux which confused me a bit.

Also do I need to un-install and remove the previous version before installing again?

Definitely.

I'd rather install 2.0 on openSUSE too than downgrade to 1.6.x. There is an easy way to do this: just add "Publishing" repo for openSUSE and update LyX. Explanations about this can be found on LyX wiki.

I'm not sure if there is a way to install 1.6.10 automatically, from a repo, so you might have to install it from source.

And, if you want 1.6.5 on Ubuntu too, try Ctrl+E on LyX in Synaptic to see if that version is available, or try installing it manually by downloading .deb package from here. If you decide to do this, remove 2.0 prior to installing 1.6.5.

If you decide to upgrade to 2.0 instead of downgrading to 1.6.x (and provided that you installed LyX from repos, using YaST or zypper, and not compiled it yourself from source), then update should take care of everything, no need to manually remove the previous version.

Hi,
Thanks again for your reply... I decided that I want to upgrade to version 2.0 on Suse but when I try to upgrade using Yast it still download version 1.6.5. Do you have any idea why that might be?

Hi again,
I also tried typing this in the terminal and still when I run lyx the 1.6.5 version comes up. I am relatively new to linux as well so not sure if I am doing anything wrong.

Have you tried the installation by YaST? If not, do so. Perhaps it can be necessary to switch system packages to this repository. Version 2.0 is definitely in there.

Thanks for your reply. I mentioned that in a post before the last one, you probably didn't see it. So yeah, I used YAST and it stayed at the same version.

Then you need to switch the system packages to that repository. You should see a corresponding message while browsing a repository in YaST.
