Customise a processing Sequence »pdfLaTeX+BibTeX+pdfLaTeX«
To typeset references, the tex file has to be processed several times over, but it is inconvenient to have to run pdflatex and then bibtex separately everytime i typeset to preview. How do I customise a processing sequence to the effect needed to typeset references properly in TexWorks and TexMaker, i.e. pdflatex+bibtex+pdflatex sequence?

In its current stable version 0.4.0 TeXworks offers a build profile with latexmk (see attachment). Probably that's what you're looking for. It does not depend on the TeX distribution. On MiKTeX you may try texify instead of the usual typesetting engines.
