Error messages when trying to view pdf

Post by magali »

Hello,
I am working on a report and everything was working fine when I tried to view in .pdf format.
After 2 hours working, I tried viewing again and got manny error messages.
Most of them concern a certain sentence of the next, but I see nothing wrong with it.

The error messages I get are:

"Paci
c}}, \mbox{pp. 298--306}.
I've inserted a begin-math/end-math symbol since I think
you left one out. Proceed, with fingers crossed."

"Pacific}
}, \mbox{pp. 298--306}.
I've deleted a group-closing symbol because it seems to be
spurious, as in `$x}$'. But perhaps the } is legitimate and
you forgot something else, as in `\hbox{$x}'. In such cases
the way to recover is to insert both the forgotten and the
deleted material, e.g., by typing `I$}'."

Any ideas on what this means?

Unfortunately, I tried to make a copy of this part of the text to make an example file, but the errors disappear. But along with the errors, also all of my references and math symbols. That is why I did not post an example here.

Thank you in advance.

Is your editor capable of telling you which lines in your code give an error. If you paste those lines, it might be easier to help.

Frits, this is the LyX forum, so (s)he's using LyX. (Which makes it all the stranger, since it must be hard to create errors like this in LyX.)

Indeed, I am working on LyX. It is very strange that I suddenly started to get these errors, because until 2 days ago, tre .pdf conversion was working fine.
What happens is when I try to view in .pdf Lyx gives me a list of errors. Unfortunately, I have no idea what they mean (I posted some of the error messages on the first message, above).

It doesn't tell me which line has the error. Rather, it highlights the sentence. But I experimentally tried to just get rid of those sentences, and it's like the error "moves" to the sentence that starts to occupy the place of the previous one.

I thought it could be because I changed some references on my reference manager (Mendeley desktop), so something could be wrong with the citations. I re-inserted all of them and it made no difference.

I also tried to look at the code (in View>>Source), but everything looks normal (although I am no LaTex programmer, so I wouldn't know anyway...).

Do any of you know how I could at least try to find out what these errors mean so that I can fix them?

Hey people,

I figured out the problem.
Turns out that I searched for what "\mbox{pp. 298--306}" from the error messages I posted above meant.

I went through the last references that I had inserted and found out that "298-306" were the pages of an article whose reference was one of the last I inserted on the text.

I simply removed that reference and all the error messages were gone!

For future reference:
the error messages, most of them, were pointing a paragraph that had nothing to do with this reference. That is why it was so dull to find out what the problem was. I think these error messages should be more intuitive.

Thanx for the help.

Then please mark the topic (not the last post) accordingly as clearly written in Section 3 of the Board Rules (to be read before posting).
