I am using USBTeX to write a report at work (because I do not have the necessary rights to install anything) on a Windows XP machine.

At the moment, I'm working on a document that I started at home on a Ubuntu machine. It compiled perfectly there. When I try to compile the same document at work, I get problems with simplemargins.sty. The lines of code posted below are in the preamble of the document; I'm using them to set the margins. When I compile the document at work, I find that the margins are not being set to the specified values. I even tried entering unreasonable values such as 5in to no avail...

What could the problem be?

It is better to use the geometry package to set margins. The simplemargins package is obsolete and error-prone. See this thread and this one.

I'll try that when I get to work instead.

It might be worth noting that I was having the same kind of difficulty with sectsty.sty. Primarily, I was using it for changing the font size of headings. Secondarily, I was using it to change the appearance of chapter headings so that they look more like section headings (number, then heading on the same line).

It was working fine under Ubuntu, but when I started working on it under Windows, I noticed that the chapter headings retained their default appearance (not like section headings (chapter number followed by the chapter heading several lines further down). I did not have the time to check whether the section headings' sizes were being affected by the commands, but I suspect they also weren't responding to sectsty.sty.

Can you suggest anything for this?

I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for and in which log... Can I assume that, if my main file is named 'body.tex' you wanted me to look in 'body.log'? I looked through it myself, but I couldn't find anything terribly wrong. The contents are pasted below.

Yeah, that's the one I meant. And no, I don't see anything terribly wrong in there either. You are using an older version of sectsty (2.0.1 from 1999; the current version is 2.0.2 from 2002.) You could see if updating it, or your TeX system generally helped.

If not, try creating a minimal simple document -- a minimal working example -- only loading the packages in question and see if you have the same problem. If possible, try viewing the output with different views and see if that makes a difference. If that doesn't pinpoint the problem, you could then post the minimal example along with its output here.
