Yeah, of course that was what I meant when I said I'd performed a fresh install.

I have just enabled the option "Create symlinks to standard directories" (so I did not have to adjust any system paths) and have not touched the other options.

(On my Debian Squeeze system I have disabled all language options except English, French, and German.)

OK, have you selected the full package?

If this is the default one, yes. If not, no.

Sorry for joking, but I did not care (since this was only a test installation which I did in the background), I really just enabled the option "Create symlinks to standard directories", and started the installation, that's all.

Mmh... I'm 99% sure full-package is the default option, but anyway if you install texinfo, the question remains open.
I appreciate you've done very much for me, though.
P.S.
The problem revolves around texlive-docindex:

Code: Select all

[6/12, 02:08/02:42] update: texlive-docindex [177k] (21022 -> 21051) ... done
/usr/local/bin/tlmgr: (make_container xits.r20217.tar.xz) texmf-dist/doc/fonts/xits/build.py does not exist
/usr/local/bin/tlmgr: (make_container xits.r20217.tar.xz) texmf-dist/doc/fonts/xits/fontcoverage.py does not exist

But this package is reported as installed according to tlmgr, while texinfo is not (I've excluded it during installation). Are the two somehow related?

Just to make sure that there is no misunderstanding: I have installed the Debian texinfo package (on my Debian Squeeze system), not the TeXlive2010 one. And it seems that this package was already installed on my system before I started the TeXlive2010 installation since I haven't installed it knowingly and it has not be installed with TeXworks. (When I try to remove the texinfo package the system does not complain about broken dependencies, so I assume that the Debian Squeeze installation has already installed the texinfo package.)

(No idea about texinfo on the Ubuntu 10.10 system, will take a look tomorrow and report.)

Have you already tried to install TL2010 on a fresh Ubuntu or Debian system, e.g. inside a freshly created virtual machine?

No, I'll try with a virtual machine.
Anyhow, if texlive-docindex is not affected by the update, no error shows up.

On my virtual Ubuntu 10.10 system texinfo is not installed. So I assume the texinfo package has nothing to do with the problems you have.

You mean it's not installed as per tlmgr or as per Software Center? Furthermore, could you take a look at the status of texlive-docindex in tlmgr?
Thank you.

I must confess that I forgot to look into tlmgr, so I just did: On my Debian system texinfo is installed with the debian AND the TeXlive package manager (but I haven't noticed any problems so far because of this). On my Ubuntu one it is only installed with the TeXlive package manager.
Furthermore, could you take a look at the status of texlive-docindex in tlmgr?
texlive-docindex is installed there, on both systems. I just updated it (on my Debian system) without problems or error messages.
