Hi Martin

Thanks for responding. Last week I had to reload MiKTeX and TeXnicCenter onto my system, which runs under Windows 7 Home Premium.

As usual, I first attempted to download the complete MiKTeX but, as usual, after a couple of hours, it failed, so I donlaoded the Basic version (2.9). On installing, I set 'Ask me first', for downloading packages on the fly.

Attempting to Build and View my document as a pdf from TeXnicCenter, no output was produced (0 Errors, 0 Warnings, 0 Bad Boxes, 0 Pages). I found I could produce ps file, but not pdf or dvi. I was getting the errore message "pdflatex.exe: GUI framework cannot be initialized".

I googled this and found advice to check the setting for downloading packages on the fly, and to try 'Yes' instead of 'Ask me first', and to run FNDB in both user and admin accounts. I did these, and managed to move the problem on a little but not solve it. Currently, the error message I get is:

"pdflatex.exe: Cannot start MiKTeX package manager.
pdflatex.exe: Data: Invalid syntax

Latex Error: File `caption.sty' not found."

What else can I try, please?

Pat

This is strange. Can you start the Miktex Package Manager from the Start menu? You could install the caption package manually. Also, you may post this on the Miktex help forum.

Hi Martin

I decided to uninstall and re-install MiKTeX and the problem has gone!

This time I selected 'Yes' at the outset for installing packages on the fly, rather than changing to that from 'Ask me first'. I don't know if that is relevant.

I could (and can) start the Package Manager from the Stsrt menu, but then and now, the update wizard won't run.

Thanks for your interest in my problem.

Best wishes
