Graphics, Figures & Tables ⇒ Cross-referencing chemistry structures in a figure

Hi all,

First, I've never written anything useful in latex, just playing a little to learn.

I'm about to write my master thesis in organic chemistry. Usually you will have a figure with a reaction which includes a couple of different molecules. Under some of these molecules will be a number which will be referenced in the text, for example: '... by treating 5 with an equimolar amount of 7 ...'. Another concern is that there might be a variable group on structure 8 and I will reference to structure 8b-c for example.

So the question is: how should I go about doing this in latex? The images will be generated in ChemDraw. Should I just manually keep track of these references? Adding a number under the structure in ChemDraw and write that number throughout the text. Theres likely to be over 100 structures.
