MikTex 2.8 with Texniccenter Windows 7 64 bit Help

Post by doctordoctor »

Hello,

First time on the forum. I apologize if this is redundant. I really am growing very frustrated trying to get these two to work. I have tried countless forums and hints and whatnot and none of it works. I keep getting a "I can't read this file" and something about the .log file. I really for the life of me can't understand this. I had MiKTeX 2.7 working with Adobe Reader 7.0, then bought a new laptop and soon the problems began. I would really appreciate a straight forward method to doing this. I had previously been keeping my files in C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.8\tex\latex. Maybe that's funky but it's worked fine before. Now I can't get anything to talk, PDF files won't run, the TeXnicCenter can't find the MiKTeX. I give up.

Recommended reading 2024:

LaTeXguide.org • LaTeX-Cookbook.net • TikZ.org

NEW: TikZ book now 40% off at Amazon.com for a short time.

And: Currently, Packt sells ebooks for $4.99 each if you buy 5 of their over 1000 ebooks. If you choose only a single one, $9.99. How about combining 3 LaTeX books with Python, gnuplot, mathplotlib, Matlab, ChatGPT or other AI books? Epub and PDF. Bundle (3 books, add more for higher discount): https://packt.link/MDH5p

Were you using XP before?

Anyway, please post the code to a minimal sample document which is giving you trouble, and also upload (as an attachment) the exact .log file which is generated when you try to run it.

Anyway, you shouldn't keep your own files in the MikTeX directory, but in your own local tex tree (for custom packages, etc.), or in "My Documents".

You could have found out that by using the Forum Search. A remote diagnosis is very difficult. You may ask someone from your circle of friends and acquaintances who is familiar with LaTeX and could have a direct look at your machine.

Best regards and welcome to the board
