I agree, the difference between 8.64.dfsg.1-0ubuntu8 and 8.64.dfsg.1-0ubuntu8.1 must be Ubuntu-specific...

I experience no problems on a gentoo-based desktop, with slightly different minor versions.

pdfcrop results in pdfTEX error

Maciek,
My workaround was to downgrade to the minor version "8.64.dfsg.1-0ubuntu8" of both ghostscript and libgs8 (from 8.64.dfsg.1-0ubuntu8.1).
Please please how do I do this downgrade? I am desparate in slapping a course together relying on much pdf cropping of figures.
