LyX ⇒ Advice needed how to get LyX spell checker working

Hello!

I am very excited about learning how to use LaTeX. I have started using Lyx as a step in the right direction and I am having a lot of trouble getting the spell checker to install properly. Can anyone give me the idiot's guide to installing aspell?

I have gone through the installation three times, reconfigured, and I still can get it to work. I feel like if I sat down and focused I could figure out the answer, but I would rather just have someone tell me.

The error i get is

The spellchecker could not be started
No word list can be found for the language "en_US"

I have googled the hell out of this, alas my google-fu is weak. Please help me. I want a spell checker.
