miktex 2.8, pdflatex, no bounding box

Post by seth »

I am using miktex 2.8 pdflatex on a document that worked with miktex 2.7.
All figures imported with \includegraphics fail with the error:

! LaTeX Error: Cannot determine size of graphic in figs/robotphoto.jpg (no BoundingBox).

(It says LaTeX error, but pdflatex is what is being run, e.g., the command and first few lines of the output are:

prompt>pdflatex full
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (MiKTeX 2.8)
entering extended mode.

Anyone know what the problem is? (Occurs for .jpg, .png, and .pdf)

You didn't really compile with pdflatex, but with latex which doesn't accept these formats. It can't be explained in any other way.

Best regards and welcome to the board

No, I really did compile with pdflatex. Or, if not, then I don't know how to do that with miktex 2.8. Here is the log file:

miktex 2.8, pdflatex, no bounding box

Post by localghost »

A log file alone without the source that produces it is completely useless in most cases [1]. From the log file I can see that you are using the dvips option for the graphicx package. Drop it completely because such driver options are superfluous since packages that would need it detect on their own which compiler engine is running.

SOLUTION: remove package rotating. For some reason it is mucking with includegraphics. I don't know why, but it solved the problem

This is certainly not the clue.

Actually, localghost's answer concerning deleting the dvips argument worked for me (I am editing a book & had to fix someone else's latex). Thanks localghost.
