Representation of Greek letters (math) in LYX

Post by icherkas »

Hi,

I am trying to get used to LYX after using SWP for many years. Thought I have been able to put on all desired settings, I have a probelm I am not able to resolve.

Some Greek letters in math do not show up. When I type I can see gama, for instance, but delta will look like an empty square box on the screen. So half of the letters are not shown on the screen. Though, when I compile pdf, they are OK!

I have tried the following:

1. Checked that all settings are default in LYX
2. Checked fonts (BAkoma) to be in the system and in the folders of LYX.
3. Re-installed Miktex and LYX comletely.
4. Played with fonts settings inside LYX.

Problem still remains.

I have Windows 7, ENG version, with unicode set to Russian, Miktex 2.8, lates LYX.

Please, help!

I have got a similar problem on Windows 7 (LyX 1.6.5.1), only the displayed characters are different. I can see delta and varepsilon and some others, and the others are displayed as an empty box. I wonder if it is a conflict with scientific workplace (SWP) fonts. I have a version of SWP, which I cannot remove because my coauthors use it. I have no problem on my linux laptop.

Use the link ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/contrib/BaKoMa4LyX-1.1.zip to download the BaKoMa fonts. Unpack the zip archive to a temporary directory somewhere. Now run the Windows font applet from the Control Panel, and use it to install the eight BaKoMa fonts. After they're installed, you can erase the temp directory - but you might want to hang onto the zip file, in case you need to reinstall them. Restart LyX and math fonts should work.

Recent versions of LyX for Windows put these fonts in <lyx>\Resources\fonts, but for some unknown reason they don't always work. You can try use the Windows font applet to install them from that folder, without the zip download.

Thanks badou, but it does not seem to be a font installation problem. (I have already tried your solution, and it didn't work, unfortunately.) I have alpha, beta and gamma empty, and delta is OK, then varepsilon is fine, and then suddenly some of lower-case greek letters are displayed as unrelated cap greek letters. All the capital greek letters are displayed fine. I have a groundless feeling that it might be related with qt. I wonder if there is any gtk version of lyx for windows for test.

Representation of Greek letters (math) in LYX

After reading http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@l ... 64838.html, I just removed cmmi10 from windows fonts (and did nothing else). This worked for me. I think the SWP cmmi10 font causes a trouble in non-English Windows 7.

This worked for my XP computer but failed to work for my Vista one. I uninstalled LyX and reinstalled LyX 1.6.6. I did not touch any setting. Then I removed cmmi10 and all the rest of the fonts that are in Bakoma / already with LyX (1.6.6) -- they appeared as shortcuts along with "Ribit's cmmi10" and "Ribit's cmex10" etc (I removed Ribit's too). Then I installed the fonts from the <lyx>\resources\fonts (right-click, install).

This did not work. Another difference between the computers is that the XP doesn't have SWP installed while the Vista one does.

Anyone still struggling with this or is it just me?

To make it clear, I removed cmmi10 using "Control Panel -> Fonts", so now my "Windows Fonts" contains no cmmi10. I didn't install Bakoma fonts.
