\thebibliography and the main index

When using the "thebibliography" command to generate the bibliography is there any way of the main index recognize it?

What you call »main index« is better known as the »Table of Contents« (ToC). For standard classes try the tocbibind package to get an entry for your bibliography in the ToC. Other classes may have built-in features.
