LaTexLab.org - Open Source Web Based LaTex Editor

Post by -Job- »

LaTexLab.org is a web-based LaTeX document editor - the plan is to take the current development version to a stable state and then release the source. The project site at google-code is:
http://code.google.com/p/latex-lab/

FireFox and IE are the only supported browsers. The (buggy) development version is here:
http://pi.latexlab.org:803/

If you're a web developer or a latex expert or just have experience setting up and/or maintaining Open Source projects you'll have the opportunity to contribute - this is my first Open Source project so i'm a little blurry on some areas, i'm also far from being a latex expert - i may need some guidance in the near future. There's much to gain from a community-driven Open Source web-based full-featured LaTeX editor.

Recommended reading 2024:

LaTeXguide.org • LaTeX-Cookbook.net • TikZ.org

NEW: TikZ book now 40% off at Amazon.com for a short time.

Hi Job,

This webapp is really cool. It seems quite capable too. I was able to compile quite a large document containing some less common packages. Tikz picture wouldn't show up but for the rest it worked OK.

I especially like the preview feature (although I think that clicking on it shouldn't trigger refresh). Compilation seems quite speedy. Do you do a custom format dump from the preamble, or use some other magic?

So far the main use of this app I see for myself is a quick compile and preview of some LaTeX snippets. I wouldn't trust any larger project to anything that doesn't run entirely from my PC - I expect that might be a problem for others as well - but in general I see a lot of value in your effort.

I've noticed that your post hasn't attracted much traffic. You may consider posting to comp.text.tex if you are interested in getting more feedback.

Cheers,

T3

PS. http://pi.latexlab.org:803/ seems to be down.

This project is reviving as a LaTeX editor for Google Docs. I'm looking for volunteers for beta testing.

The editor will resemble the Google Docs editor closely. Document reads/writes are made exclusively to Google Docs. Here are some screens:

http://reactor.bloo.us/images/ll-screen-2.png
http://reactor.bloo.us/images/ll-screen-3.png

The compiler can be pointed to any CLSI implementation. CLSI is a web service interface for LaTeX:
http://code.google.com/p/common-latex-s ... interface/

This will give you the option of pointing to a LaTeX environment of your choice - such as a common LaTeX server for your company or University, if one is available. You'll also be able to use LaTeX Lab with a local MikTeX or TeX Live installation in your computer.

The editor is open source and free to use. If you want to contribute to the project, let me know.

This looks very interesting! Have been looking for solutions like this. Have not found any this promising, and have not had time to develop anything myself. Is it possible to sign up for betatesting?

If you like browser based latex editors: Another online latex editor can be found at http://www.verbosus.com which allows syntax highlighting, .pdf creation and preview directly in the browser, a backup system, etc.

There's also an according topic here in the forum [1]. The discussion with very interesting user feedback about this web application can be found there.
