Placing a single figure and a single table side by side

Hi,

I want to place a figure and a table side by side in latex. I have read about the \minipage and \subfigure packages but these are for placing two figures or two table side by side (unless I'm missing something). What I want is a single figure and a single table to be side by side with each having its own label and caption.

Please help! and thanks in advance

The caption manual (Section 4.1, Example 4) introduces an interesting alternative to the example that gmedina pointed to.
