General ⇒ API error 21 Device not ready

when compiling in tecnix center a .tex file which works fine on my other computer into a pdf i get the error

API error 21 Device not ready

from pdflatex.exe. any idea why this is? the clasic restart does nothing, and even a reinstall gave the same problem. Maybe it is a problem with my miktex, however the same two programs work fine on the other machine. maybe its vista (old on xp)

any ideas as i am stumped

oh and output to ps etc gives problems aswell, same thing, device not ready
