Texmaker won't display images in build

I've tried it in TexnicCenter, too, but the image won't output. Here's the log output:

! Undefined control sequence.
<recently read> \includegraphics

It seems that you have not loaded the graphics or graphicx packages. Please, add \usepackage{graphicx} in the preamble and try again.

I put "\usepackage{graphics}" and "\usepackage{graphicx}" in the preamble, but now when I try to view the pdf, it gives me this message:

Adobe reader could not open the file "trilinability.pdf" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and not properly decoded).

The \includegraphics command is defined in both packages, so you need to load only one of them. I prefer graphicx, but you have the choice. Remove one of the \usepackage commands.

Code: Select all

but now when I try to view the pdf, it gives me this message:

Adobe reader could not open the file "trilinability.pdf" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and not properly decoded).
Please provide a minimal working example and attach the graphics file, if possible.

Ok, here's where the figure would go:
\documentclass[11pt,letterpaper]{paper}
\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{amsfonts}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage{makeidx}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\author{Cory Wilson}
\begin{document}
\begin{enumerate}
\begin{center}
Trilinability in an Equilateral Triangle
\end{center}\\\\
\begin{flushleft}
Step 1: Occurs from beginning until parallelograms meet in the center\\
\textit{See figure 1}\\
\begin{figure}
\includegraphics[scale=1]{trilinablestep1a.png}
\end{figure}
\end{flushleft}\\
\item $\ell_{1} \parallel \ell_{2}$, $\ell_{3} \parallel \ell_{4}$

And here's the image:

Hummm. You have not provided a minimal working example. It is not minimal (for example, is the amsmath package relevant for the problem discussed here?). It is not working (it is impossible to compile it without errors or, at most, with the error we try to detect).

The following piece of code it is not minimal too, but at least it works. I have tried to guess what you pretend to do.

Code: Select all

\documentclass[11pt,letterpaper]{paper}
\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}
\usepackage{amsmath,amssymb}
\usepackage{makeidx}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{hyperref}

\author{Cory Wilson}

\begin{document}

\begin{figure}[tbp]
  \centering
  \includegraphics{trilinablestep1a.png}
  \caption{Trilinability in an Equilateral Triangle}\label{fig:trili}
\end{figure}

\begin{enumerate}
  \item Step 1: Occurs from beginning until parallelograms meet
        in the center (\textit{see Figure~\ref{fig:trili}}).
  \item $\ell_{1} \parallel \ell_{2}$, $\ell_{3} \parallel \ell_{4}$.
\end{enumerate}

\end{document}

I can generate the pdf file. I can see it with Acrobat Reader. So I think that, in your case, there are many compilation errors, pdfLaTeX doesn't build the pdf and so you cannot open or see it. Am I right?

Try to read a good tutorial or book about LaTeX. For example, you misunderstand the usage of the \\ command. It is not like "hitting the return key" in a WYSIWYG editor to get more vertical space. For this you should use commands as \smallskip or \vspace.

Ok, I found the problem. But now when I do:
\begin{figure}
\includegraphics{Figure1.png}
\end{figure}

The image will only show up at the top of the page it ends up on.

Use the optional argument of the figure environment to fix the location of the figure. See the preceding example. You can also use the h descriptor, instead of t, b and p, to force LaTeX to place the figure at the point of the document where the environment appears. Use \caption if you want to add a caption to the figure.
