placing a small figure inside a larger one

Hi guys.

Is there a way to add a small figure into a large one?
The subfigure package allows me to put to figure with one caption or two figures side by sides but that not what I want.

I have added a figure to

I see several possible solutions.
In case you have the diagrams already present as graphics files the first point would the preferable.
