The tocloft manual (Section 2.3 - Typesetting the entries, p. 8ff) explicitly says that »X« has to be replaced by the according sectioning identifier like gmedina showed in his reply.

That moves chapter entries over very effectively, but it takes all front matter and back matter with it.
I need to find a way to indent just chapter and appendix entries, leaving all others (Abstract, Bibliography etc.) as they are, flush left.

Thank you for that. It did what I wanted it to do, but it created another problem--how to deal with front matter and back matter. If I leave them as chapters they don't look right in the TOC. If I make them parts, then the PDF bookmarks get strange and the body of the dissertation is subordinate to the List of Abbreviations. Printing is the main concern, so for that I am all set.
