LyX ⇒ Paragraph cross reference problems

Hi,
Im trying to write my report, and i have got down to the paragraph section of heading. Im trying to cross reference them in the text as numbers, but when i view the pdf all i get is ??
so an example of what i mean is i have a section called A 1.2.1 compound x and i want to write in the text "compound x (A 1.2.1) was made by..." and what i end up with is "compound x (??) was made by..."
I had to change the settings to make the paragraph numbering visable, but i cant see one to make to cross reference work, i just assumed it would?!

any ideas what im doing wrong?

Hi and welcome to the forum. For starters, please provide Minimum Working Example, which people here can compile and according to the output suggest you what to do.

Hi,
I see how to do that in latex itself, but how can i type code in lyx? im just starting to use it and dont know all the ins and outs of it. also, the pdf 'prints' fine, you just get the ?? instead of the reference link.

with LyX you could use LaTeX code by ERT.

Ok, well im still writing it, but i alos just notcied that the pdf isnt printing any of the paragraph lines either, so my titles: "A 1.2.1. compound x" arent coming out either. If i change them to subsubsections they show up...
