I've just learned that there's another lightweight editor in development, and released in Beta, called "gummi". Has anyone tried that?

From the screenshot I can see the preview and error box on the same side of the screen, which I would like better, I think.

Doesn't look bad. There is a RPM package for easy installation on my system and unhindered testing.

Too spartan for my taste, but has potential. There's a package for Ubuntu on getdeb.net too.

Unfortunately, the Ubuntu package lists TeXlive as a dependency, and of course the Ubuntu repositorues still use TeXlive 2007--so for those of us with TeXlive 2008 installed, it would be the same nonsense as with Kile, creating dummy packages, etc.

I have compiled it from source, and it is right now very spartan indeed, with almost nothing to customize. (I imagine that's just because it's early in the development cycle.) It's also fairly buggy. I lost about 10 minutes of work when it crashed on me earlier.

I really like the preview, however, which updates in real time. I haven't seen something work as well as it does on this score.
