Force inline style in displaymath

I have a summation in the displaymath environment that I want to force into the smaller inline style. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm sorry if this question is nebulous, my TeX talk is terrible. Feel free to ask for clarification. Thanks for the help!

One possibility is to use the \textstyle command:

If you want something 'intermediate', the nccmath package has a series of mediumsized maths,that reduces the size of selected formulae by 20%. It is part of the ncctools bundle.
