Just to add some information

So apparently it is the mpm.exe which doesn't go thourgh ...
well ! when I do ftp to the jussieu repository it works
I tried by cmd command to do mpm set-repository="ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr"
it is accepted ...but nothing else
...I mean now I can see this repository when I try to run the setting or update ...
but still to connection fails by tcp_connect()

thanks

hum ...
I found out my little mistake .... I had install MiKTeX while on a university campus ... therefore with a proxy setting ...that is with the environment variable http_proxy set up to the proxy url:port ... and in fact now I am off the campus ...

I just renamed it ... and it works fine!
If the error was mentioning the connection problem properly such as "connection to blah blah via proxy blah blah failed"
I would have been easier to identify the problem ....
Notice also the proxy setting could be un the MiKTeX GUI to be able to change easily the setting (whilst moving from home to Uni etc ...)

cheers

I've got MikTex installed on some university machines, all WinXP, with the proxy server set up properly from the package manager GUI. The funny thing is that on some systems it works, whereas on others it responds with "connect failed in tcp_connect()". I changed the environment variable (http_proxy) as well. Cant figure it out!
