Hello!

Post by kaosoft »

Hello there.

I'm new to the LaTeX world, and while I've been doing documentation in my company for some time now, it was through OpenOffice. I had seen some LaTeX here and there before, but now that my company is aiming to get certificated, it's time I get into more professional documentation editing. 8-)

Also, it will help me to practice for my own projects, including university thesis and all that stuff. I've never seen projects using LaTeX here in my country (only Adobe tools, and I once saw someone using QuarkXPress), so I think it's a good time to start. ;)

Anyways, I'm on a Windows environment, and using the MiKTeX 2.8 package.

Thank you very much for welcoming here. Goodbye!

Welcome, kaosoft. It is a good choice you've made. No app/tool can really compare to LaTeX when quality is at stake. First steps in learning LaTeX can be hard, but it is definitely worth the effort.

The books published by the mathematics department of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia are composed using LaTeX.

A very good decision. It's always useful to have some experience with LaTeX before approaching a project like a thesis.

Like I said, none that I've seen... Besides, I don't write many mathematical texts. In any case, thank you for letting me know.

Just one question before I go deep into your forums... if I'm planning to use the Gentium Book Basic font (which is TrueType), is there an easy way to use it in a LaTeX environment, or is it better to just use XeTeX? Remember I'm still very new!

Thanks!

That's already a question that belongs to the forum (LaTeX » Fonts and Character sets). The answer is to use XeTeX.

There's a gentium package, included in the MiKTeX distribution, to be used with standard pdfTeX and ConTeXt, but apparently there's no LaTeX support yet.

The following FAQ could be useful for you:

Gentium-FAQ

I would suggest you to use XeLaTeX from the beginning.

P.S.: maybe these last replies deserve to be in a thread of their own.

Edit: well, localghost has already answered.
