Is there any way to break a tabular environment over a page?

For example, I have a table that won't fit into the remaining space on a page, so LaTeX moves the whole table onto the next page leaving a lot of blank space, can I break up the table so that part of it is on the current page, while the rest that doesn't fit is on the new page.

you could use for instance the longtable package.
