Hi, my query is as to whether it is possible to have LaTeX automatically number only those equations which are referenced by \eqref{...} somewhere within the document.

It's a bit clunky to have to add \nonumber or \begin{align*} manually as required.

the mathtools package allows you to achieve this. Please refer to the package documentation (subsection 3.3.2 "Showing only referenced tags" (pp 9 and 10)).
