I need to give number to the chemical compounds within the figure, and finding some difficulties. I used to that in a different mac by placing a temporary lable in the chem draw, where I originally draw them, and then refer it in the text. Now, it doesn't work!! I think that I must have been missing some things when I installed the latex on my mac!
please help!

numbering the compounds within the figure
I have absolutely no idea of what could be boing wrong. That might be caused by the lack of a minimal working example (MWE). I can only suggest to use the chemscheme package. If I understand you right, this should solve the issue.

Re: numbering the compounds within the figure
I have recently found out the problem encountered because it automatically convert latex to pdf, and read the generated pdf.
so how can I convert tex 2 dvi2ps then ps2pdf like the old version. because converting directly to pdf makes me lose the lables of the compounds within the figure, using chemscheme package.
how can I do that? do I need to download any thing extra? I have the texlive and texshop installed on a mac.
The chemscheme package consists of two parts, both related to
chemical schemes. The package adds a scheme float type to the
LaTeX default types figure and table. The scheme float type
acts in the same way as those defined by the LaTeX kernel, but
is intended for chemical schemes. The package also provides a
method for adding automatic chemical numbering to schemes.
many thanks
