Math & Science ⇒ Inappropriate spacing in some formulas

Hello,

this is my first post here. I've written something as usual as:

$x + y = u + v$

and:

$f\colon A \times B \to \omega$

and it causes strange spacing:


It's highly strange to me -- why only one of pluses has too wide space (and only on the left side)? The only workaround for this I was able to find is to delete spaces in places where they're too large; that is, such formulas:

Code: Select all

$x + y = u+ v$

and:

Code: Select all

$f\colon A\times B \to \omega$

are OK.

I can't even think about what can cause such a strange behaviour; maybe someone could help me?

P.S. I use Ubuntu Hardy (8.04), my TeXLive version is 2007-13ubuntu0.1.

If you would post a compilable minimal working example showing the inappropriate spacing we could test the code and fix it.

BTW, I realised that if I write this:

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
$f \colon {A \times B}$

$x + y = {u + v}$
\end{document}

or that:

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
$f \colon A\times B$

$x + y = u+ v$
\end{document}

instead of the original one, it works properly. Nevertheless, while I could understand the change in the first example (maybe \colon treated "A" as the function domain and this was the reason of the strange spacing), I cannot understand why it's also necessary in the second case.

I don't get that strange spacing with the first MWE. Does this MWE really produce the unwanted behaviour or did you just test your original code and copied it into that MWE? Could you post the log file for the first MWE as attachment here?

Here are the files. I tested also MWE, not only the source file, of course. The strange spacing is a little less visible with standard fonts (as used in this MWE), but it's still visible; especially in the second example ("x + y = u + v").

This file doesn't show the problem if I compile it, though I can see it in the pdf posted by you. I'm using TeX Live 2008 on Ubuntu (Eeebuntu) Linux.

Perhaps try upgrading your TeX distribution or try compiling your document on another system.

Maybe there's some bug in my Ubuntu latex package... I'll report it where needed.

EDIT: Gosh. I realised I use a slightly modified version of pdflatex that prevents one-letter words from being placed at the end of the line, it had to do also this ugly staff. I turned back the original one and it's now correct.
