Difference between Basic and Complete install

Post by zuffox »

Title says it all. I haven't managed to find any information about it for some reason.

I read that the Basic package was enough to serve the, well, basic demands, but I'd still like to know if I'm missing out on anything in the Complete package - and if so how I upgrade.

A basic installation includes enough to get started using LaTeX. It misses out a lot of stuff which you may never use. However, it also misses out stuff you might use. Luckily, MiKTeX can install new packages during a LaTeX run. So if you go with the basic installation, you might get prompted the first few times you compile stuff, to let it download extra things. Of course, if you want to have everything at your fingertips (or perhaps you'll not be connected to the Internet when you are using your LaTeX installation), then a full install can be useful.

Seems like I'll manage, judging by the lack of prompts.

Thanks.
